چکیده

Models that rely exclusively on static representations cannot account fully for the flexibility of human analogymaking. More sophisticated models should provide mechanisms for dynamic extension, elaboration, and rerepresentation of episodes. One such mechanism—the instantiation mechanism—is described. It uses the target problem as a template for extending the source and vice versa. These extensions are driven and constrained by semantic knowledge about general regularities in the domain. The instantiation mechanism has been developed within a model of analogy-making called AMBR. It relies on AMBR's support for parallel, decentralized, and interactive computation. The instantiation mechanism runs in parallel with the mechanisms for analog access and mapping. Thus, these latter mechanisms guide the instantiation mechanism as to which facts in the large semantic memory are relevant to the specifics of the current situ-

The Mechanisms of Episode Construction and Blending in DUAL and AMBR

This paper presents an attempt to build an integrated model of analogy-making and memory. In contrast to other models of analogy-making (Forbus et. al, 1995, Thagards et al, 1990, Hummel and Holyoak, 1997), AMBR, Associative Memory-Based Reasoning, (Kokinov, 1988, 1994a, Kokinov and Petrov, 2001) is trying to make realistic assumptions about human memory and take into account its vulnerability ...

Analogy Based Episode Blending in the AMBR Model

This article presents a series of simulation experiments investigating the interaction of memory and analogy-making in the AMBR model. This interaction leads to blending between superficially dissimilar episodes as a result of the established analogical mapping between them and of superficially and structurally dissimilar episodes as a result of a double analogy with a third episode. The condit...

Simulation of Episode Blending in the AMBR Model

This paper presents a series of simulation experiments related to the interaction of memory and analogy-making in the AMBR model. This interaction makes it possible to demonstrate blending between superficially dissimilar episodes as a result of the established analogical mapping between them and of superficially and structurally dissimilar episodes as a result of a double analogy with a third ...

Building Robots with Analogy-Based Anticipation

A new approach to building robots with anticipatory behavior is presented. This approach is based on analogy with a single episode from the past experience of the robot. The AMBR model of analogy-making is used as a basis, but it is extended with new agent-types and new mechanisms that allow anticipation related to analogical transfer. The role of selective attention on retrieval of memory epis...

Dynamic Use of Multiple Analogies in the AMBR Model Causing Re- Representation of the Target

This paper describes how the AMBR model explains multiple analogies and more specifically how the use of a superficially similar analogical base, that turns out to be inappropriate (we call it a bridge analogy), may actually lead to the rerepresentation of the target and the activation of a more appropriate remote analogical source. A simulation is described that demonstrates this capability of...
